Model the whole return

A Roth conversion moves money from a traditional retirement account to Roth. The untaxed portion is generally included in income for that year. The decision should be tested alongside deductions, capital gains, Social Security, Medicare income thresholds, state taxes, and charitable plans.

  • Estimate income before the conversion.
  • Test several conversion amounts.
  • Check Medicare and other income-related thresholds.
  • Compare taxes paid now with a range of future outcomes.

Use guardrails

Do not convert simply because a bracket has room. Preserve emergency cash, verify withholding or estimated payments, and coordinate with required distributions because an RMD itself generally cannot be converted.
